Description

The Crescendo-Systems BM5.1 Bass Management Module is an active filter and is primarily intended for use together with DVD, DVD-Audio and SACD players, but has use in all 5.1 audio systems where there is no programmable crossover network between the sub-woofer and satellites. The crossover frequency can be set separately for the front left, right and center speakers and the surround left and right speakers, important when these sets of speakers don't have the same low-end extension. In addition to several different crossover frequencies there is also a flat setting in case a set of speakers can handle the full frequency range.

The type of filter used is a phase- and time continuous filter with a 12dB/octave slope for the sub-woofer output. This means that the sum of the low-pass and high-pass filtered output is always flat and with no phase shift, also at the cross-over frequency. The filter type used in the BM5.1 is the only one with this property, all others have phase and amplitude irregularities around the cross-over frequency. Because of the long wavelength of low frequencies the summation of the wave fronts at the listening position will be perfect and no directional shift will be discernable.
